Changing Gears.... Frequently when I am speaking to people about my training and racing, they ask how I have time to train with four kids. Most mothers are baffled because they are constantly on the move and don't have ANY time to do something for themselves. I feel I have been given a gift and it is my job to develop that as fully as possible - it is something I was meant to do. I am blessed to have a husband extremely committed to my dream, a very supportive mother-in-law, and kids that are understanding of my training. They know, however, that they are first on the list of things I am committed to! The other day my six year old, Asha, was sick. She was doing a bit better earlier in the day, so I got on my bike trainer for a long ride - I had a run scheduled right off the bike. As I was getting off the bike, she told me she felt queasy. The previous day this statement was followed by a large explosion (you know what I mean), so I immediately "changed gears" and told her I wasn't going to go out. Instead I got creative and did running drills in place that took the same amount of time as the outside running would have taken. She told me later that she was happy that I stayed with her, but she was also happy that I got my "running" done. The drills were so hard, I had sore calf muscles for three days. Changing my workout was the only right decision to make - I was there for my daughter, and I got to work muscles to help me run fast! |
